MSN Autos researched and studied what are the most fuel efficient vehicles in America, and on Thursday they submitted the top 37 models.
It should come as no surprise that many of our top models are the most fuel efficient in the nation. And it should come as no surprise the Hyundai, America’s most fuel efficient model, placed four vehicles in the list. Ford had 3 cars on the list. Honda also had 3 cars make the list. Kia and Nissan’s most fuel efficient models were also selected to the list.
If you want the best fuel economy, MSN suggests checking out the top plug in models.
The notables on the list as followed:
No. 1 overall on MSN’s Fuel Efficient List is the 2013 Honda Fit Electric Vehicle. According to EPA estimates, this vehicle gets an EPA equivalent MPG of 132 mpge city and 118 highway mpge. It uses the Earth Dreams technology also found in the 2013 Honda Accord, but this model is a plug-in electric. Unfortunately, this vehicle is only going to be available in Oregon and California, and there will only be 1,100 available.
No. 2 overall is the 2013 Mitsubishi iMiEV. Prior to the Fit EV release, it broke fuel economy records, reaching 126 mpge city and 112 mpge highway. We’ve already had fun with this model earlier this year. The best part right now? It is available in Ohio, and customers can get up to $10,000 rebate when they purchase and iMiEV.
2012 Nissan Leaf
We’ve already showed you the Leaf this year, and no surprise that it is in the top five for the most fuel efficient models in the world. The plug-in electric gets 106 mpge city/99 mpge highway. It was the 2011 World Car of the Year, and it is also a plug-in available in our area.
2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid
The North American car of the Year short list finalist, the Ford C-Max is new model for 2013 that received 47 mpg city and highway. The experts are already comparing this hybrid favorably to the Toyota Prius.
2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid
Next on the list is the redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Much like the C-Max, the Fusion received 47 mpg city and highway. You’ll also get the features and the gorgeous styling of the coming-soon 2013 Ford Fusion.
2012 Honda Civic Hybrid
A newcomer in 2012, the 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid builds off that platform to be one of America’s Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles. Described as a “Hybrid Muscle Car,” it gets 206 horsepower and features a 6-speed sport-shift automatic technology.
As a leader in America’s Most Fuel Efficient Lineup, the 2012 Hyundai Sonata gets 35 mpg city/40 highway. Like it’s cousin, the Optima Hybrid, the Sonata Hyrbid gets 206 horsepower, making it more powerful than the standard gasoline Sonata.
The Rio Eco gets 31 mpg city/40 mpg highway thanks to the idle stop and go system. The standard 2013 Kia Rio is nearly as fuel efficient thanks to 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.
The Elantra is one of the most fuel efficient vehicles not to have the word “Hybird, Eco or Plug-In” in it’s title. This stylish model is the reigning North American Car of the Year. We’re sure the 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway is a big reason why everyone seems to love Hyundai right now.
2013 Hyundai Accent
And speaking of Hyundai, right behind the Elantra is the 2013 Hyundai Accent. The little brother to the Elantra, the small, smart Accent gets 30 mpg city/40 highway. It’s no wonder there is so much success at Hyundai right now.
SFE stands for Super Fuel Economy. It comes in the sedan and hatchback models and it uses side air deflectors, underbody shields, aero grille inserts and low-resistance tires to increase fuel efficiency.
This model gets 29 mpg city/40 mpg on the highway.
Another member of the Hyundai family appears with the 2013 Hyundai Veloster. We love the Turbo model, and overall this funky 3-door sports car gets 29 mpg city/40 on the highway in the 6-speed manual transmission option.
2012 Honda Civic HF
Rounding out our list is the 2012 Civic HF. This is a special Civic trim that gets 29 mpg city/41 highway. To achieve this fuel economy it uses wind-cheating underbody panels, lower ride height, special wheels, low-resistance tires and a special rear spoiler
