With tougher fuel efficiency standards, manufacturers are shrinking the size of their engines. However, automakers are proving, when it comes to engines, this isn’t a zero-sum game.

The Subaru BRZ I4 engine puts out an impressive 200 horsepower with 22 mpg in the city, and 30 mpg on the highway. Subaru created the BRZ to be an affordable sports car, and the smaller engine makes that a reality. Better fuel efficiency without losing too much power makes this a well-balanced and fun to drive sports car.

The 2013 Nissan Altima’s 182 horsepower I4 achieves up to 27 mpg in the city, and 38 mpg on the highway. Nissan has made the Altima a leader in fuel efficiency.
