Compare the 2013 Honda Civic to the 2013 Toyota Corolla

The Honda Civic received a mid-model refresh this year. Honda managed to bring back a lot of things people thought were lacking in the 2012 models, and added a ton of new standard features. Let’s see how the Honda Civic compares to its competitor the 2013 Toyota Corolla.

Starting with Price

We compared the 2013 Honda Civic LX (entry level trim) with the 2013 Toyota Corolla S (mid level trim) because they had similar price points and closer matching standard features than the Corollas entry level trim. The MSRPs for these vehicles are very close with the Civic at $18,965 and the Corolla at $19,060 making it only a $95 difference. When looking at estimated residual values however, the Civic takes it hands down by being worth 17% more after 36 months than the Corolla.

 

The difference is in the drive train

Both models have a 1.8L engine with variable valve timing, however, the Civic offers 8 more horsepower. The Civic also trumps the Toyota by offering a 5 speed automatic versus the Corollas antiquated 4 speed transmission. These differences add up when you look fuel economy where the Civic wins out in every kind of driving. The Civic gets 28 MPG in the city versus the Corollas 26 MPG, on the highway the Civic receives 39 MPG to the Corollas 34 MPG, when Combined that means the Civic averages 32 MPG against the Corollas 29 MPG.

 

Features, features, features

Honda has managed to pack a ton of standard features into the 2013 Honda Civic. Every 2013 Civic comes standard with a backup camera which is not even available on the Corolla. The Civic also comes standard with steering wheel controls including Bluetooth phone/audio support which is an optional extra on the Corolla. The Civic even comes with automatic headlights, which again is an optional extra on the 2013 Toyota Corolla.

 

The Wrap-up

The Civic continues to outperform its competition by receiving a NHTSA overall crash rating of 5 versus the Corollas 4.  The Civic also boasts larger interior volume which means more space for you and your passengers.  If you are looking for a compact sedan the Civic is the hands down winner.  The 2013 Honda Civic LX rises above the 2013 Toyota Corollas S by offering better fuel economy, safety, and standard features.
