Mitsubishi and Nissan announced Tuesday they are joining forces on two future vehicles, including a new mid-sized that will hit the American market.

The yet-unnamed vehicle will be released under the Mitsubishi brand name as a Renault based vehicle. A second electric vehicle development will be developed by this new joint venture.

Osamu Masuko, President of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation commented: “As a result of the development of collaborative projects with Nissan Motor up to now, Mitsubishi Motors is pleased to work again with Nissan and now Renault towards achieving further collaborations. The new opportunities could be described as evidence that the ongoing collaborative projects between Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan have brought positive results, and Mitsubishi Motors hopes that any new collaborative projects with the Renault-Nissan Alliance would bring us further merits”

This partnership was reported by Automotive News and released in statements by both Mitsubishi and Nissan. This new midsized sedan was not given a name or a release date in Tuesday’s announcement.

“Nissan and Mitsubishi have jointly benefited from several collaborations in the past,” Carlos Ghosn, CEO of both Renault and Nissan, said in the statement. “I welcome the direction being taken toward this broader cooperation, creating new opportunities for Renault in addition.”

This new joint partnership on an electric vehicle should be interesting. Both Mitsubishi and Nissan have experienced success producing electric vehicles in the United States — Mitsubishi has the i-Miev and Nissan has the Nissan Leaf.

It’s been a great year already for Mitsubishi. They released two new vehicles in the American market to great success — the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage. The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport continues to be one of the safest SUVs you can buy. Adding another vehicle to its American lineup should only further strengthen the Mitsubishi brand and Mitsubishi American story.
